Fu il primo comandante generale nativo del Colorado. Figlio di Albert W. Manhart, si è laureato alla Douglas County High School di Castle Rock ed ha frequentato la Colorado School of Mines prima di entrare nell’Accademia militare a West Point, N. Tra le sue decorazioni figurano la Legione al Merito, la Stella d'Argento, la Stella di Bronzo con grappolo di foglie di quercia, la Medaglia Italiana al Valor Militare e il Distintivo del Fante da Combattimento.

Among the figures who were key participants in the November 1943 operations toward the Mignano Pass was certainly Lieutenant Colonel Ashton H. Manhart.
He was the first native Colorado commanding general. The son of Albert W. Manhart, he graduated from Douglas County High School in Castle Rock and attended the Colorado School of Mines before entering the Military Academy at West Point, N. Y., where he graduated in 1932. General Manhart was a regimental soldier in the famous 3rd Infantry Division during World War II. He fought with it from the first invasions of North Africa, taking his 3rd Battalion, 15th Infantry, from Morocco through Tunisia and into Sicily and to the Anzio beachhead, where he took command of the 15th. His other service includes command of the 136th Infantry Regiment, 34th Division, in Italy, with which he ended World War II. After the war he was on the staff of the Field Artillery School, Fort Sill, Oklahoma and was director of education at the Infantry School, Fort Henning. As general he was deputy assistant commander of the 24th Infantry Division in Korea in 1950. Later assignments included: chief, operations and training air support center, Fort Bragg. Chief of Europe and Middle East, operations division, operations and training, Department of the Army. Member of the Army, senior team, policy, training and organization, Joint Staff, 1954-1956. In 1956 became chief of plans and policy, operations and training branch; commander-in-chief Pacific, moving in 1957 to deputy chief of staff for plans on the same staff. He continued his career as commander of the 25th Infantry Division in Hawaii. During his time in Europe, the general graduated from the École Superieure de Guerre in Paris and completed the National War College course in 1952. His decorations include the Legion of Merit, the Silver Star, the Bronze Star with oak leaf cluster, the Italian Military Valor Medal and the Combat Infantryman's Badge.
